He's not going anywhere. Fabian Schär has signed a new one-year deal with Newcastle United, keeping him at St James' Park until the end of the 2026/27 season. The entire Toon Army can breathe again.
The Swiss centre-back, who turns 35 in December, will now enter his ninth season as a Magpie. Nine seasons. For a player who cost just £3 million from Deportivo La Coruña back in 2018, that is one of the best bits of business this club has ever done.
Why This News Is Massive
Let's not undersell this. Fabby has made 251 appearances for Newcastle in all competitions. He's the second-longest serving player in the current squad. He scored a stunning long-range strike in the Champions League win over PSG. He was a key part of the squad that lifted the Carabao Cup, ending a 70-year domestic trophy drought.
And Eddie Howe has made no secret of how much he values him. "I think Fabian's been unbelievable for us," Howe said during contract talks. "I still feel he has a lot to offer."
When the gaffer talks about a player like that, you keep him. Simple as.
A Geordie Legend in the Making
Here's the thing about Fabian Schär. He's not even from the North East, but he's earned the love of every Toon fan who's watched him play. The long-range thunderbolts. The no-nonsense defending. The passing from deep that Howe himself said was "a big miss" during Schär's injury absence this season.
He's one of those players who just gets what it means to wear the shirt. And now he's staying for another year to help write the next chapter.
